Fuchsia

Fuchsia is contributing a beautiful poem to the first issue.

Here’s a sneak peek at what you are in store for!

War and Peace

I asked him what War and Peace was about

whilst he was talking in his sleep

and he muttered something to do with a rocking horse

and a bear.

I took this as proof he hadn’t read it

and cited it in an argument years later.

He said that was preposterous

and that he had read it,

he just didn’t remember what happened,

and how dare I take advantage of him

in that vulnerable state.

She is also in the process of creating a poetry zine too. Check her out!

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

One of our lovely contributors, Fuchsia, told us about this interesting BBC Radio discussion with historian Juliette Barker looking at people collecting hair and why. Have a listen.

An Evening With John Alfred

John Alfred makes origami! Not just any old origami either, but beautiful creations from small Japanese paper.

He took us to Aubrey’s Traditional Creperie to begin with where he told us about his hobby and showed us some work.

He leaves his pieces behind at cafes and restaurants as a thank you to the people who have served him. A lovely idea that brightens unsuspecting recipients days. This is always done as an anonymous gift, with John quickly leaving without a chance to be thanked himself.

This was what he left Meg the waitress, it was turned over so she couldn’t see it as this would ruin the surprise.

We then went to The Old Malt Cross for a lesson in origami making.

He asked us to pick out our favourite colour paper which we then swapped between ourselves so that we would make one for each other.

This is what we ended up with!

John’s way of remembering each person he meets and creates with is to name and date each piece which he keeps in a jar along with hundreds of others. He picks out a random selection every once in a while to remember that specific meeting.

Hopefully our evening with him will be remembered for a long time too.

An interview and reasoning behind this beautiful hobby will be up on the website soon and we are also keeping some of his truly special pieces for issue one of the zine so make sure you get a copy!
